1995 The Gondoliers

The Gondoliers
Performance dates:
June 1995
Performance times:
7.45pm
Location:
Cordes Hall, Sunninghill
Synopsis:

First performed in 1889, The Gondoliers was the last of the well remembered Savoy operas. There were only two more, Utopia Ltd and The Grand Duke, and they are rarely performed today.

In this production, the scene is set in Venice in the 1920's. An English touring cricket party, no doubt playing the Gondoliers XI, find themselves drawn into events. Insurrection in Barataria forces the Grand Inquisitor to search out the well known but impossible to identify heir to the throne, thought to be one of two brothers, both gondoliers. He persuades the heir (whichever it is) to take up the reins of government only to find he is in danger of creating a Republican society! Despite schemes and desires by almost all the protagonists, love finally conquers all. With true Gilbertiari style every knot is untangled and the surprise ending is held back until the finale itself.
